In Mexico, traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of unintentional death, particularly among people between the ages of 5 and 44. One of the most dangerous distractions behind the wheel is cell phone use. Although many drivers recognize this risk, a large majority continue to use their devices while driving.

The Impact of a Distraction

Responding to a message or taking a call may seem harmless, but these actions significantly increase the risk of being involved in or causing an accident. Studies indicate that approximately 71% of traffic accidents are attributed to the driver; of this percentage, 20% are caused by recklessness or intentional actions, including cell phone use.

Alarming Statistics

Cell Phone Use While Driving:Six out of ten drivers in Mexico admit to using their cell phones while driving. Of these, 66% use them to make calls, 60% for navigation and checking maps, and 43% to play music.

Risk Perception:Although 90% of drivers recognize that using a cell phone while driving is dangerous, 60% admit to doing so.

Distracted driving, particularly due to cell phone use, contributes to a significant number of fatal accidents. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), approximately 45 people die every day in Mexico as a result of traffic accidents, many of which are linked to cell phone use while driving.

It is essential to remember that no message or phone call is more important than a life. When driving, our full attention should be on the road. If you need to use your cell phone, it is always best to pull over and stop in a safe location before doing so.

Recommendations for Safe Driving

"Do Not Disturb" Mode:Activate this feature on your cell phone to avoid distractions while driving.

Hands-Free Doesn't Mean Risk-Free:Although hands-free devices reduce manual distraction, cognitive distraction remains. It is best to avoid any cell phone use while driving.

Plan Your Route:Before starting your trip, set up your GPS and prepare your music playlists to minimize the need to handle your phone while on the road.

Collective Awareness:If you are a passenger, support the driver by avoiding distractions and offering to help with their phone if necessary.

Let's always remember: a message can wait; your life cannot. Let's prioritize safety and promote a culture of responsible road use in our communities.
